Firefighters Endorse Gina Papan for County Supervisor

Millbrae Councilwoman Gina Papan Receives Endorsements for County Supervisor Seat.

Local public safety and government officials endorsed Gina Papan on March 21 for San Mateo County Board of Supervisor as voters prepare to select a candidate in a special all mail-in election on May 3.

Supporters gathered at the International Association of Firefighters Local 2400 headquarters in San Mateo to stand behind Papan’s campaign against five other candidates, including three current elected officials: Terry Nagel, mayor of Burlingame, Dave Pine, San Mateo Union High School District trustee, and Richard Holober, a San Mateo County College District trustee.

“I can think of no other candidate who is better qualified to work with the county and the state,” said San Mateo County Sheriff Greg Munks.

Raised in San Mateo County, Papan served as Millbrae mayor in 2008 and as California Deputy Attorney General for 17 years.

She believes her experience is what differentiates her from the other candidates.

“We need to put people to work and make the budget sustainable,” she said.

Papan admits the difficulty in preserving social services while struggling with tough financial times, but assured that her experience would facilitate public employees to make concessions.

“She spearheaded programs that share police and fire chiefs between cities, saving valuable resources while maintaining the same response times,” said San Bruno Mayor Jim Ruane in a statement.

In addition to service consolidation, she also suggested the county fully utilize its assets to increase revenue, like capitalizing on the several public properties that are currently underused.

Papan’s next appearance will be at the Coastside Community Council Candidates Forum on Tuesday March 29 at the Fireside Room in Seton Coastside Hospital, located at 600 Marina Blvd. in Moss Beach.

Papan will never ask them to fund their own pensions. Given these economic times, firefighters should fund their own pensions -- and stop taking so much money from the County. Current retirees from the County system are receiving as much as $200,000 a year in pension benefits. These types of payouts are no longer sustainable by the taxpayer.

Ms. Summers - The police and fire people who get the exorbitant pensions are most often upper management. It's call spiking and it is something that should be stopped. (Spiking is when you increase your final year(s) compensation, either through a promotion or massive overtime, to increase your pension.) The average police or firefighter never even comes close to those figures. Standard Republican or Tea Party rhetoric to tar everyone with the same bloated brush.

Mr. Hallman, I know Gina and she has long ago come out from under her father's shadow. Gina has worked hard for the people she represented. I do not know the other candidates so I cannot speak to their abilities; I do know Gina and she is a hard working, and genuinely interested in helping people.

I am a Candidate for Supervisor Dist. 1 Here is a copy of my e-mail to my Supervisor Rich Gordon after I read about the JAW DROPPING news of our Sheriff and Undersheriff being CUSTOMERS of Underaged Sex Slaves.

Formal request to remove both Greg Munks and Carlos BolanosWednesday, April 25, 2007 2:02 PM
From: "Michael Stogner" <michaelgstogner@yahoo.com>
To: rgordon@co.sanmateo.ca.us
Dear Rich,

This is a very serious challenge for all of San Mateo
County.
You are the only Supervisor who I believe to be
serious about your position, and I trust you and
support you.

I need you to take public action to remove both of
these men now.

I know Greg is elected but Carlos is not. He is your
employee.

Sincerely,

Michael G. Stogner

I checked numerous sites and found nothing that even hinted that the women working in the brothel were underage or sex slaves. I was bothered by the incident when it happened, and I still believe that the Sheriff Munks should have resigned. Under Sheriff Bolanos by all accounts was not in the brothel but waited outside.

If you Google Operation Dollhouse Greg Munks...
"They were not arrested," said police spokesman Bill Cassell. "They were in one of the brothels that we raided.

"Police do not think the women entered prostitution on their own. Police believe they were either brought here by force or tricked into believing they would have a good job when they came." The police do not think? Nothing in the article even suggests they were underage. There was no proof that they were sex slaves.

Every other report stated that Bolanos was outside the brothel.

Your citing this incident as a comment to an article about Gina Papan's endorsements is just plain wrong.

I don't believe it is. Bill Cassell said they were in one of the brothels...the key word was IN. not waiting in the limo.

I have published for you my e-mail to Supervisor Rich Gordon the day I read about this Jaw Dropping story...

What did Gina Papan do for the citizens of San Mateo County when she learned the same info I did. Lets see it.

In a blast e-mail to supporters, San Mateo County Supervisor and Assembly candidate Jerry Hill has attacked opponent Millbrae Mayor Gina Papan over an exchange between the two candidates during a candidate forum last Saturday hosted by the Pacifica Democratic Club.
Hill’s e-mail states:
"This past Saturday while attending a Democratic candidate debate I was attacked by Gina Papan regarding San Mateo County Sheriff Greg Munks embarrassing actions while on a trip to Las Vegas last year. She tried to connect my responsibilities as Supervisor with Sheriff Munks poor judgment."

Bruce, Lets take one item at a time.....

Stogner's e-mail to Supervisor Rich Gordon 4/25/2007.........Gina Papan's communication to anybody in San Mateo County's Leadership on or about 4/25/2007.

There is no question that Supervisor Jerry Hill was in Las Vegas the same weekend that our two highest ranking Sheriff's were brought out of a single family residence located at 3474 Eldon Street. Las Vegasw with guns to their heads by the FBI. I am the person who wrote a blog about it on the San Mateo Daily Journal...Community Forum. (No longer in existence)

This attack you report about is towards Jerry Hill who lied to reporter Robert Lyles of Channel 5 when asked about Munks Trip Expenditures...."These trips happened under the Radar, Nobody knew they were happening."...Thats the lie..

Please show me what Gina Papan did around 4/25/2007 like I did.

So your problem is that Gina didn't do something soon enough to suit you?

"I was in the Pacifica audience when Gina Papan raised the Munks issue Saturday morning. I didn't get excited at all by the shaky news accounts of whatever took place in Las Vegas last year, but I have to question the integrity of an individual holding public office who brings it out of the dugout during a campaign for another office she'd rather have. In a field of three candidates, Ms. Papan, in my book, now sits somewhere around fourth or fifth.
I think she did the right thing by bringing it out."

Why shouldn't she. It is not settled yet and she was brave enough to bring it.

Good job Gina

And who wrote this piece congratulating Gina? Michael Stogner, then of San Leandro on April 22, 2008.

Bruce, I am confident that you know I am the only candidate who has personally requested (by certified mail ) that Sheriff Greg Munks and UnderSheriff Carlos Bolanos Resign.

Google: Forget Schindler's List We are all about Stogner's List.

What have any of the other candidates done on this one subject....at or around 4/25/2007

Mr. Stogner you may be the only candidate who has personally requested (by certified mail) that they resign. If this were a one issue race, wow you'd be in the lead. It is not. There is far more to running a county than jumping up and down about one specific issue.

I believe Gina Papan has shown over the years that she has the where-with-all to properly represent the people of San Mateo County.

I am confident that you know I no longer reside in San Mateo County and I really don't have a dog in this fight.

I am also confident that you realize that I also believe Sheriff Munks should have resigned over this issue when it happened.

That has never been the case I have always lived in San Mateo County however some of the different websites that I blogged on would show I was from different locations...I don't know why I never have nor have I ever said I lived anywhere other than San Mateo County.

I can assure you the Sheriff issue is only one of the many issues I have worked on.

Thank You for your comments.

Mr. Stogner, as a political hopeful, has it ever occurred to you that the contemporary priorities of those in San Mateo County should be the foci of campaigning, rather than dredging up resolved incidents from nearly half a decade ago? This question is really intended as rhetorical for your own reflection, not for another lengthy diatribe to increase the volume of your contributions in this forum...
